If you’re considering assisted living for you or your loved one, you may wonder what the rules are. Can residents come and go as they please? Many people think assisted living communities are strict and clinical settings, but the reality is quite different.
In general, residents can come and go in assisted living, though individual communities may have their own rules and safety measures. At the heart of assisted living, though, is a philosophy that balances independence with the appropriate level of support.
If you’re interested in assisted living, tour the community to see first-hand what it offers. Don’t hesitate to ask questions about freedom, rules, costs, and what services, amenities, and programs the community offers, including dining options.
What Is Assisted Living?
Assisted living is designed for older adults who desire independence but require some support with everyday tasks. Residents in assisted living communities often live in private apartments with access to communal spaces. Services like dining, housekeeping, security, and help with medication are often provided. Many communities also offer recreational and social activities, events, and outings.
At Kingston Residence of Vermilion, we want residents to feel at home. Small pets are welcome if residents pay a small deposit and are in charge of their care. Residents are also free to decorate and personalize their private apartment, and there are opportunities for group outings and cultural events.
We also encourage residents to explore our neighborhood. Located on the scenic shores of Lake Erie, our community is close to beautiful places like Beulah Beach and Vermilion’s Harbor Town Historic District. We sometimes take our residents on outings to explore the surrounding areas, and for those who prefer indoor spaces, we also do outings to malls, museums, and local businesses.
Assisted Living vs. Nursing Homes
Assisted living is not the same thing as skilled nursing. Unlike assisted living, nursing homes have a more medical focus and may offer rehabilitation and therapy services in addition to support with everyday tasks. Assisted living residents do not require the more intensive level of care provided at nursing homes.
At Kingston Healthcare in Vermilion, skilled nursing, memory care, and rehabilitation are offered at our sister location, Kingston of Vermilion.
Features of Assisted Living

The advantage of assisted living is that help is there if and when you need it. But outside of that, residents are typically encouraged to live the way they want.
Balance of Independence & Support
The philosophy behind assisted living is a balance of autonomy and assistance. For example, at Kingston Residence of Vermilion, each resident receives a personalized care plan so staff can honor their unique needs for support and independence.
Staff can help residents with dressing, hygiene, mobility, dining, and managing medications. Levels of care can be adjusted as a resident’s needs change. Residents can also benefit from 24/7 nursing staff and safety and security features like a 24/7 call system.
Convenient Services & Amenities
Another benefit of assisted living is the convenient and accessible services and amenities residents have at their disposal. For example, at Kingston Residence of Vermilion, residents can enjoy housekeeping and laundry services along with an exceptional dining program. Our chefs can whip up a family recipe or we can deliver meals for a quiet night in. Guests can also join residents for dining.
Social & Recreational Opportunities
Participating in the activities you enjoy can get more difficult with age. However, at an assisted living community, the activities come to you! This means less planning or commuting.
At Kingston Residence of Vermilion, residents can take advantage of a fitness center, exercise classes, and outdoor spaces. We also offer therapies and services that support mobility, independence, and communication.
How to Find the Right Assisted Living Community
If you desire independence but could benefit from a little extra help, assisted living might be a good fit. Here are some tips to help you find the right community:
- Location: Consider proximity to loved ones and desired amenities. Or consider what kind of landscape or climate you want to live in.
- Costs: Ask about what’s included and what costs extra. You can also take our 4-minute quiz for personalized insight into your financial options. Veterans should explore the American Veterans Aid & Attendance program.
- Rules: While residents can generally come and go in assisted living, individual communities may have their own rules, such as more security requirements at certain hours. It’s best that everyone be on the same page with regard to rules and responsibilities.
- Programs: Everyone is unique. If you have a special preference for types of activities (eg. art or fitness) or if you desire a certain type of therapy, see if the community offers it.
- Visit in person: It’s always a good idea to visit the community yourself. Explore the accommodations, talk to current residents, and ask staff all your questions.
At Kingston Residence of Vermilion, we like to celebrate each resident’s story. But we’re also about building a sense of belonging in the community, which is why we encourage our residents to explore the neighborhood and engage in their favorite activities.
