What Is Memory Care?
Memory care is a lifestyle program tailored for individuals living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Through a structured environment and stimulating activities, our goal is to enhance cognitive function and promote holistic well-being.
We implement Teepa Snow’s GEMS model to discern and address the distinct requirements of each resident through personalized care strategies.
Teepa Snow’s GEMSĀ® Model
Our community uses proven memory care techniques to support our residents, and we help families learn more about effective communication and interaction with their loved ones.
The core of our care stems from Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care and the GEMSĀ® model. We train our staff to engage with residents compassionately, recognizing each individual’s capabilities while providing support.
We achieve this by breaking down the level of care we provide into 6 categories, or “gems.”
Sapphire
A sapphire brain is aging normally, is flexible, is organized, and works well with other GEMS. Individuals in a sapphire state make excellent care partners for those with dementia due to their adaptability.
Emerald
In the emerald state, people may lose clarity in their thoughts and communication. They also might not recognize these changes, often attributing issues to others.
Family members and caregivers observing these behaviors often find more success in adapting to the situation rather than highlighting flaws.
Diamond
People in a diamond state remain clear and sharp but can become more rigid, displaying many cognitive abilities but some inflexibility to daily changes and challenges. They can still shine despite the challenges they face.
This state, characterized by apparent stubbornness and a mix of past and present behaviors, can make it challenging for families to recognize the presence of dementia.
Pearl
At the pearl state, the individual’s reflexes are constantly active, body systems can start to fail, and gross motor skills can deteriorate. Despite these challenges, with proper care, the individual can still thrive, and their inner being can still be appreciated.
Ruby
In the ruby state, people can experience a decline in fine motor skills, affecting vision, speech, and the ability to chew and swallow. However, they may retain the ability to perform larger movements and maintain their strength.
Care partners must manage stress in helping people experiencing these challenges by stepping back, breathing deeply, and adopting a flexible, understanding approach to return to a calm, supportive state, akin to being a sapphire.
Amber
Residents of an amber state are often engrossed in the present, driven by sensations, and prioritize curiosity over caution. They may have a reduced awareness of safety.
They seek out enjoyable experiences but react strongly against things they dislike, presenting a challenge for family caregivers who may struggle with inconsistency between the person’s current behavior and their past self.
